Peony walked to the library the long way. She always took the long way. The short way went near the hospital and the voices were to loud and so many people.
The long way gave her more time to herself. She went to the library every day after school now. She found herself not wanting to be at home any more.
Her parents wouldn't believe her she had no one to talk to so she could lose herself in books and pretend.
It was a nice day and the long way took her past the park where she could see kids playing. She smiled as she walked past some kids playing with water guns.
She got to the library and smiled at the librarians who knew her well. She made her way to the history section going through books she had already read. Finding one on Egyptian history she pulled it from the shelf and found a chair. Settling herself she opened the book and started to read.

"Feh. Egyptians." Talon said in a rough voice as she sat across from the girl. She was wearing sunglasses over her pale face and straight-black eyes, and plenty of blood was in use, keeping her looking less corpse-like and more simply unhealthy looking. her fangs, though still pointed, like her black nails, were not the oversized things they usually were, like her claws. "Sure, all that architecture sounds impressive 'til you see how many slaves they had. And mummification...we were doing it years before they were."
"You just hate sun worshippers." Briarthorn replied dryly, to which her vampiric companion shrugged. "Hello there, Peony. My name is Briarthorn, and this is Ms. Talon. May we speak to you for a moment?"

Peony about jumped out of her skin. The color left her face as she looked at the two women in front of her. She thought for a moment she couldn't remember them being there when she sat down.
She looked between the two staring for a while at the odd looking woman before looking to the one who addressed her. "um...ya?"

"I will be blunt. I run an Academy for young people that have been touched by the supernatural." She said with a matter-of-fact casual tone. "And you have recently become a medium if I am not incorrect. At my school, I can teach you how to control your newfound powers, as well as show you what the world is really like."

Peony looked at the woman as she spoke casting side glances at the other woman. "I am a what? A school?"
Peony looked confused as she let the book fall from her hands. "I don't know what you mean. I don't have any powers...Just some...bad dreams."

"We both know that isn't true, Peony." Briar said, not without some sympathy. "The spirits of the dead do not talk to just anyone. Only a few have the natural talent to do so. You know that are not dreams, Peony. Even if you do not want to admit it to yourself."
The statuesque woman removed a battered tarot deck from her pocket. "When I was a little girl, I had dreams as well. Sometimes, even though I thought they were just dreams, they came true." Briarthorn casually laid out a spread of cards in front of her. "Someone in my family's caravan recognized I had a gift, and I was taught how to forsee events, see the future, as it were." She looked at Peony, an earnest look in her eyes. "I have seen others with gifts such as myself who did not recieve the care and training I did." Briar turned the cards slowly over, glanced at the results, frowned slightly, and replaced them in her pocket. "Gifts such as those I have, and as you have, are rare and wonderful talents. But left unchecked, and they can cause madness, or worse, in their subconscious rampage. I can offer you control."

Peony watched Briarthorn as she set out the cards and talked. Her eyes grew wide as she spoke. "You...You mean you believe me?" Peony shifted slightly in her chair.
"Everyone else thinks I am making it up....or crazy." Peony fiddled with the end of her long braid and looked at Briarthorn "I...I am not crazy." she seemed to be looking the woman's face as if trying to prove something to her as well as to herself.

"Of course we believe you." Talon said bluntly. "Not only do we believe you, but we wanna help you out. Whaddaya say, kid?"
Briar added, "Of course, we will need to speak with your parents first." She sighed. "If they do not believe me, you will still be able to go. I may simply have to offer magical aid in convincing them. Would you like to attend my academy, Peony?"

Peony looked to Talon then back to Briarthorn and teared up a bit as she nodded. "Yes please ma'am...I would like to go." She wiped her eyes and blushed a bit "It would be nice to have people who understand."
Peony looked at the clock on the wall of the library "My mother will be home she is always home. My Dad works for another hour"

Briarthorn smiled slightly. "Excellent."
They were in front of her home with a flash, thanks to a teleportation spell. When they entered, Briar asked, "If it's no trouble, could I bother you for a spot of tea?"

Peony had been sitting so when she was suddenly transported she promptly fell on her bottom as they arrived. She blinked and looked horribly confused almost frightened as she brushed herself off and entered her house.
She blinked in amazement at the woman who just let herself in. "uh...I..think we have some tea."
As Peony spoke a woman in her early forty's walked into the living room and looked surprised at the gathering in her living room. "Peony honey...is something wrong?" There was a worried tone to her voice as she looked at her daughter.
"Hello mom...this is...Um. They are...from a school." Peony stammered as she dropped her bag by the door and went to her mother.
"This is Briarthorn and Ms. Talon." She motioned to each woman in turn. "Mom...do we have any tea?"
Peony's mother put a protective hand on her daughters shoulder and smiled at each woman in turn. "I am Jessica Conway nice to meet you both." She looked at Peony and nodded. "Yes dear we do in the cabinet above the sink why don't you go make some for us."
Peony nodded and hurried off to the kitchen.
Peony's mother motioned to the couch "Please won't you both have a seat? Is there some problem with Peony at school? I thought I knew all her teachers names."

"No problem that I am aware of. I am not one of her teachers currently. Rather, I hope to be. My name is Briarthorn, and this is Talon. I run a school for those touched by the supernatural." She said with a complete matter-of-fact tone. "Your daughter has blossomed into a medium, and I would like to train her and help her hone her talents. And before you say anything," Shimmering, multi-colored flame hovered around Briar's outstretched hand lazily.
Talon removed her glasses and let her illusion fade--her skin was corpse-like, her fangs and claws prominent. But in the shimmering light, she looked far less intimidating than she would otherwise.
"Magic is real. I am an enchantress of no small ability, and my colleague is a vampire. We mean no harm. My school can teach your daughter how to use her gift to protect herself, and others. She will also be taught to defend herself from those things in the dark that may wish to hurt or use. And, believe me when I say that there are far worse things in the night than you are aware of."

Jessica Conway looked pale and sat or rather fell onto a chair near her. She looked at the two women and seemed to stare at the vampire eyes wide any attempt at politeness gone. "You mean her dreams" She seemed to be lost in her words unable to handle what was set before her.
"Wait how did you know about her dreams? And no offense but arnt vampires all about harm?" She looked at Briarthorn with a raised eyebrow.

"There are always people that, when given power of any sort, will abuse it." Briar said. "And not every vampire abuses their power. Many live peacefully, off of animals. Others find themselves withdrawing from blood banks, or only drinking the dying."
Talon nodded. "Yeah, we ain't all about mass slaughter and stuff like that. I take what I need. I kill only when necessary, and that's never related to feeding."
"As for your other question, I knew about her dreams because I have read about them from my tarot deck." Briar replied as if that answer was both sufficient and self-explanatory.

Jessica shook her head before rubbing her forehead "So, what your saying is my daughters dreams are real. And you Ms. Briarthorn run a school that can help her?" She looked at the vampire again and shivered a bit before returning her gaze to Briarthorn.
