"Freeze!" A fairy yelled behind Johnny Noone, firing his tiny but lethal gun after the fleeing figure.
Johnny Noone wore a black suit with a white tie, white gloves, and a white, smiling drama mask. His hair was wild and silver and under a black bowler hat. With the hair, his high collar, and the mask and gloves, none of his actual flesh could be seen. He was running down the streets of Avalon, which were, as usually, packed.
"I don't think so, friend." A hollow voice called from inside Johnny Noone. "Try to be a bit more confident! I might be more inclined to stop if you weren't shaking so hard you're about to drop your gun!"
The amber sky of Avalon shone overhead, and fairies, elves, and nymphs parted, confused by the black clad figure as the fairy cop shouted, "Don't let him get away! He's an escaped Unseelie!"
Which, of course, had the exact opposite reaction. Suddenly the crowds burst, people fleeing every which way from Johnny Noone.
"They're gonna catch you, Johnny." A voice, not his own, said in his head.
"Bloody...Fox? That you?" Johnny ducked down an alley as bullets tore past him just as an elven cop turned the corner in front of him. Two. Great.
"Yes, Johnny. I'm free now. All the old gang is free. Seems Lu has a job for us. You in?"
"Will you get me the hell away from the heat?" The Unseelie replied. "Cause I can't do much if Titania's guard puts an iron bullet in me."
"Turn right and run out into the fields. A feral sidhe opened up a fairy circle without realizing it. You can use it before that old which or her guard see it's there." The voice said, and Johnny did as it told.
"How do I know you're not on Oberon's take trying to get me back for a reduced sentence?" Johnny's hollow voice asked as he ducked through an archway and headed out of the city towards the infinite fields surrounding the fae capital.
"Would I do a thing like that to one of my oldest friends?"
"In a heartbeat."
"You're right. But I'm not in this cirumstance. So move."
Johnny was aware that there was a mob of elves, fairies, nymphs, and more running after him. Just ahead, he saw a circle of mushrooms and glowed ever-so-faintly in a meadow. He leapt into the circle just as the pack of fae behind him opened fire.
There was a bright flash and an explosion of pain, and Johnny stumbled out--no longer in Arcadia, but now, fortunately, on earth. The Unseelie wasted no time in stomping away the mushrooms in the circle the moment after, hopefully blocking any pursuit.
He patted himself down. No wounds. And then his hands found his face, and nearly cut themselves on the jagged shards of his mask. One of the bullets had grazed it, tearing a chunk out of the lower right side. Hard, sharp ceramic met his touch.
"Bloody god damn son of a..." he grumbled. "Fox. My mask is broken."
There was no mental reply. Instead, Johnny felt something slink up behind him. He pivoted quickly, and saw a young male form, looking to be in his teens, with bright red hair, fox ears and three fox tails behind him, one of which was sliced off at the halfway point. He wore a wife beater and a pair of baggy black pants. His eyes were turquoise and full of cruel mischief, and while his features were gentle and mostly human, his expression, and the way he carried himself, was very predatory.
"So get a new one. I'm sure Lu will have a spare." Fox replied.
"Well, I could walk around with my mask off until then. Sure you'd love that." Johnny replied, at which Fox paled.
"Fuck, man, you don't need to be like that. Alright, alright. But we can't stay here much longer. Briarthorn's gonna be in the neighborhood. Soon." The kitsune replied.
"Briar..." Johnny stepped forward and smacked his colleague in the back of the head.
"Ow man, that fucking hurt!" Fox replied, holding his head and cursing. "Jesus. I think I have a concussion!"
"Got to hell, I got shot, and you tell me after you bring me here that you brought me to a place where Briar is going to be. Are you trying to get me sent back to jail? She's going to sense me the moment she steps foot anywhere near here." Johnny Noone said angrily back to the kitsune.
"Look man, it was either take you to the fairy circle or let Titania's men drag your iron-riddled corpse back to jail." Fox retorted. "So let's get going, stop by a costume store or something, and get back to the rest of the group."
"Woah, wait. Rest of. Who all did Lu bring together for this? What the hell is this anyway? And where are we?" Johnny asked as the pair walked towards the road, at which a brand new, flame-red convertable was waiting.
"We're in Ireland. And it looks like Lilith's gone and decided to have her kid study at Briarthorn's School for Pussy Teenagers or whatever she calls it. That means she's as open as she's gonna be. And it also means we could get a little revenge on Briar while we're at it." Fox hopped in the driver's seat while Johnny got in the passenger's, using the sunflap mirror to examine the damage done. A little of Johnny's skin could be seen under the big cracks in his mask--greyish white, and full of what almost looked to be tiny mirrors and lenses implanted directly into his flesh. "And by everyone, I mean it, man. All the old crew. Gonna get fuckin' revenge for her hubby cutting my tail off."
They drove for a while before Johnny Noone turned to Fox. "Whose car is this anyway?"
"Some bitch. She's in the trunk. Saved her for you. Thought you'd be...hungry." The fox demon's expression was even more predatory as he smirked again, revealing canine teeth that were not there when he previously had smiled.
"....you're never this considerate, my friend. What's wrong?" Johnny asked.
"Hey, nothing's wrong, just looking out for my main man who did some time in the joint, you know? Can't I show concern for my fellow ne'erdowell?" Fox replied in an affronted tone.
"No. It's not in your nature, baby-eater." Johnny Noone responded almost instantly. "Now tell me."
"...well, for one, Talon's on Briar's side now. And for another, Lilith's brat is Freddy's too. And for third, If we don't succeed, Lu's probably going to kill us and eat us. If we're very lucky, it'll be in that order too."
"...what's the good news, my friend?"
"Titania still hates Briar so she's probably not going to say a word to her about you being sprung. And Oberon wouldn't dare get caught talking to her. And because no one knows where I was being held, no one can say to anyone that I've been sprung either." Fox replied. "Crea killed everyone guarding her, Medea's supposed to be dead so no one's looking for her, everyone thinks Mort is still in his cell, and Cassandra's so crazy that no one's even tried to find her."
"And what about Lucky Seven?" Johnny said as the skin under his mask shifted to a human tone, minus embedded mirrors.
"You tell me." A soft, seductive, female voice said behind them. The Unseelie resisted the urge to look in the mirror or turn around. It would not have accomplished anything anyway.
"Seven. Always good to see you again, my very fine friend and honored leader. So to speak, at least." The Unseelie said.
"Always good to see another of my men free." Seven returned unseen. "And don't worry about that goody-good Briar tracking us. She doesn't even know I'm alive or dead. So she won't be looking for my cloaking magic. When we strike against her, she won't have a single idea what hit her until it is too late."
