There are many types of fae, and two broad categories--seelie and unseelie.
Seelie are under the rule of Titania and Oberon, queen and king of the faerie world. They are fairly ambivalent rulers, with only a few real rules--principal of which is to live in cooperation and alongside humanity.
Unseelie are creatures of nightmare and chaos. The Unseelie's last ruler was killed during the Shadow War, and their champion, Johnny Noone, was locked away by Titania and Oberon. Unseelie don't care about humanity, and often get stronger by sewing fear and discontent among them.
There are, of course, fae that have been raised by humans, who are, technically, Seelie, and will show up as such, even if they have never learned of their heritage.
All fae can use faerie circles to go back and forth between Arcadia and the human world.
All fae are bound by one weakness--if they ever make a sworn promise, they are bound to it completely. Naturally, fae know this intrinsically, even those not aware of their heritage, and usually avoid making such naturally.
