The Shadow War took place during the American Civil War.
The goal behind it was simple enough--A group of demonologists teamed up with other dark wizards and unsavory characters, such as Unseelie, wicked animal spirits, and bloodthirsty shapeshifters, to only name a few, and decided that, with the new world in turmoil, they could lay waste to it and claim the United States for their own.
Against them were the "good" supernatural elements--angels, some demons, the Seelie, etc. The war was long, and brutal, but, in the end, the key elements of the Dark side were banished and cursed, if not outright killed, and some were placed in powerful magical binding at various places in Earth and Arcadia.
This is basic knowledge that anyone newly arriving at the Academy could find out rather quickly. Anyone with even a slightly magical background, such as a parent being a mage or being raised by a demon hunter, or even being seperated from their magical parents at a young age, would know some or all of this information.
